Description

As far as I can tell the crystal ponies as a species are all earth ponies, but with a small amount of magic within each of them. We see this with their emotional state, which depending on their mood, their bodies and manes change. 

When their sad their colours are dull and their manes become droopy and they have no jewelry. 
When their happy, the bodies become bright and their manes gain style and jewelry.
 The final stage is when their really happy and their bodies become crystallized and they are able to power up the crystal heart and spread hope and love across all of Equestria.
